No charges against officers who killed teen homicide suspect

COLUMBUS – A grand jury has cleared three Columbus SWAT officers in the fatal shooting of a teenage homicide suspect in 2020.

Joseph Jewell, 17, opened the door of a room in a hotel on E. Dublin-Granville Road on Feb. 20,2020 and immediately fired on officers after police knocked and announced their presence, Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack said.

Officers Howard Brenner, Glenn Thivener and Mark Dilello returned fire and hit Jewell, who was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he later died, Tyack said.

A loaded firearm was found at the scene and it was determined that Jewell fired one round at officers, Tyack said.

No officers were injured.

Jewell was the suspect in the fatal shooting of another 17-year-old.

Tyack announced Monday that a grand jury declined to indict the officers.
