COLUMBUS – No one was injured when a Columbus SWAT officer fired a weapon while police were trying to arrest a group of juveniles, including a person of interest in a homicide investigation, on the Southeast Side Tuesday night.
Officers were serving an arrest warrant in the 4000 block of Elaine Park Drive at approximately 10:38 p.m. when they observed the suspect and two other individuals, all male juveniles, approaching a stolen vehicle, Division of Police officials said.
UPDATE 12/30/22 6:28 a.m.: Columbus police have identified the officer involved in this incident as Ofc. Mark Dilello,a 26-year veteran of the Division assigned to SWAT.
When the officers tried to take the youths into custody one of the suspects displayed a firearm and an officer discharged their weapon at least once time, though no one was struck, police said.
Officers took the three into custody and recovered two firearms from the scene.
One of the juveniles is currently being interviewed by detectives for their involvement in a homicide that occurred earlier this month, officials said.
Columbus Division of Police Homicide Bureau detectives are investigating the incident, police said.
