Officer in shooting case seen kicking suspect

COLUMBUS – A Columbus police officer captured on video apparently kicking a handcuffed suspect in the head also was involved in a fatal shooting last year.

Columbus police say Officer Zachary Rosen has been reassigned pending an investigation and Mayor Andrew Ginther released a statement calling the actions “unacceptable and inconsistent with our values as a community.”

“I was disturbed and upset when I saw the video taken on Saturday. The behavior we saw in the video was unacceptable and inconsistent with our values as a community. It erodes the trust the residents of this city place in law enforcement. Officer Rosen has been reassigned to nonpatrol duty indefinitely. I applaud Chief Jacobs for her swift action, and put the full resources of the city behind the investigation. We must remain vigilant in being transparent and accountable in order to earn and keep the trust of the public.” -Mayor Andrew Ginther

The video shows an officer restraining a man on the ground when another officer, identified as Rosen, appears to kick him in the head.

“Those actions are inconsistent with the mission and values of the City of Columbus and the Columbus Division of Police, as well as an affront to the hard-working and dedicated men and women who don the uniform every day to keep us safe.” -City Council President Zach Klein

Police reports say officers responded early Saturday to Weldon Avenue to a report of a man identified as Demarko Anderson threatening to shoot up a house and everyone inside.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Anderson, 22, pleaded not guilty Monday to numerous charges.

Rosen was one of two plainclothes officers who fatally shot Henry Green in June 2016. A grand jury last month declined to indict the officers in Green’s death.
