An officer entering an apartment house on S. Burgess Avenue through the front door on a search for illegal drugs was shot in the hip, division spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said. Officer Patrick Shrodes returned fire and the gunman dropped his weapon, Weiner said.

Shrodes, a 22-year veteran of the division, was listed in stable condition at Grant Medical Center. Weiner said.

A man inside the apartment was also shot and Weiner says Bernard Cannady, 61, was treaded for a gunshot wound to his leg at Mt. Carmel West Hospital and released. It wasn’t immediately clear who was responsible for the gunfire that wounded Cannady.

Shawn Toney, 22, was also treated for unspecified injuries sustained as he was arrested and then charged with felonious assault against a police officer, Weiner said.

Court records listed no attorney for him before arraignment Thursday.

Three other people were taken into custody and released after being questioned, Weiner said.

A handgun and narcotics were recovered at the scene, Weiner said.
