COLUMBUS – A 35-year-old man was in serious but stable condition after being shot by a Columbus police officer after authorities say he advanced toward them with a knife Wednesday night.

When officers responded to a domestic disturbance call from the 4400 block of Shoupmill Drive at approximately 10:31 p.m. arrived, they were told by neighbors that a man was arguing with his mother and was seen holding a knife, spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.
In an adjacent courtyard, the officer saw Joseph Delay holding a knife and Weiner says he was agitated and belligerent when he noticed the officers and quickly began advancing towards them with the knife.
The officers yelled numerous commands for the man to drop the knife but Delay he ignored them and He ignored their commands at which point officers deployed their Tasers twice to no effect, Weiner said.
Weiner says Delay charged at the officers with the knife and one of the officers shot him twice.
Officers began administering first aid in an attempt to stop severe bleeding before fire personnel arrived and transported the man to Grant Medical Center, Weiner said.
Three knives were recovered at the scene.
Delay was charged with two counts of felonious assault on a police officer, said Weiner.
No other injuries were reported.
