An officer, identified as Ofc. Christopher Farrington, a four-year veteran, returned fire early Sunday, but it’s not believed that the suspect was hit, police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said.

Shortly after officers on routine patrol began following a vehicle in the area of Manchester Avenue and Dresden Street at 1:44 a.m., Alex-Bouzounis says the driver of the vehicle began to drive recklessly.

The vehicle went over the curb at the intersection and the driver and a passenger took off on foot, she said.

While the officers were chasing the driver through the backyard of a home in the 1400 block of Manchester Avenue, Alex-Bouzounis says the suspect fired at the officers. One of them returned fire and the suspect ran away, she said.

No injuries were reported.

Alex-Bouzounis says a U.S. Marshals’ canine was used in the search.
