COLUMBUS – A Columbus police officer shot and injured a dog during a barricade situation on the West Side Friday night.
UPDATE: This story has been edited to remove information that identified Ofc. Kevin Chirnside as the officer who fired his weapon at the dog. We regret the error.
Officers were met with gunfire when they walked up to a home in the 600 block of S. Harris Avenue at approximately 8:14 p.m. after the ShotSpotter technology detected a gunshot in the vicinity, police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said.
An officer returned fire and a barricade situation ensued as police surrounded the home, Alex-Bouzounis said.
While officers were securing the scene, Alex-Bouzounis says a dog was released from the home and an officer fired at the dog, wounding it.
The occupants of the home were evacuated safely and the investigation continues.
There was no immediate information on any charges filed.
The Columbus Division of Police identified one of the officers who opened fire during the incident as Ofc. Kevin Chirnside, a seven-year veteran of the police division.
