Officers cleared in 2 shootings

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Department reviews have found that two Columbus police officers acted within Division of Police policies in two shootings last year.

The Firearms/Police-Involved Death Review Board decided that Ofc. Ryan VanFosson acted within the Use of Firearms policy on March 22 when he shot Timothy Slaughter in the leg while Slaughter was carrying a knife during a confrontation.

The board also ruled that Ofc. Timothy Mounts was justified when he shot a suspect May 25 after a standoff with a SWAT team near College Avenue and Petzinger Road.

Officers investigating a home invasion in Obetz chased the suspect to a nearby pond where here was a confrontation and the suspect was shot in the leg. He then shot himself in the head and was treated at Grant Medical Center.
