COLUMBUS — Columbus police say an officer exchanged gunfire with a fleeing suspect who was later caught on the East Side.
Police said officers were investigating a report of two men firing shots in an apartment complex in the area of 1962 Maryland Avenue at 2:36 Saturday morning.
When police arrived, one suspect who matched the description of the alleged gunmen ran from the area, according to division spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner.
Weiner says the man fired at officers multiple times as they chased him through the complex and one officer returned fire.
The suspect was taken into custody with an injured leg, but it’s not immediately clear how he got the injury.
He was taken to Grant Medical Center, where Weiner says he was in stable condition.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, said Weiner.
A second man matching the description of the other suspect was taken into custody and later released, Weiner said.
No officers were hurt.
The shooting is under investigation.
