COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus police say two officers shot a man to death after he fired a gun during a fight in the parking lot of an OSU campus-area nightclub overnight.
UPDATE: The actions of Officers Kareem Kashmiry and Patrick Daugherty were found to be within the Columbus Division of Police Use of Firearms Policy, spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.
Two Columbus police officers were working special duty assignments at the University Plaza shopping center when a disturbance broke out inside Charlie Bear, 2885 Olentangy River Road, at approximately 2:03 a.m., spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.
Witnesses told police one of the men involved in the argument said he was going to get a gun from a car and come back, Weiner said.
Jonathan Rodgers, 22, went to the parking lot, retrieved a gun and shot at an unidentified man who was coming out of the bar, Weiner says.
Weiner says the officers confronted the gunman and fired multiple times. Rodgers was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, Weiner said.
UPDATE: The officers involved have been identified as Kareem Kashmiry, a 13-year veteran of the police division and eight-year veteran Patrick Daugherty, Weiner said.
Police are looking for the man who was shot at. Anybody with information on the identity of that man is asked to call Columbus police at 614-645-4730,. Weiner said.
As with all police-involved shootings, the incident will be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team and the Firearms/Police-Involved Death Review Board, Weiner said.
