Officers shoot man armed with knife

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus police officers shot an unidentified knife-wielding man to death on the Southeast Side early Saturday morning.

Officers went to the 1600 block of Jonathan Drive just before 1:00 a.m. after several reports were received about a man yelling and banging on doors and trying to get inside multiple homes, police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

When the officers spotted the suspect in front of 1526 Jonathan Drive, Weiner says the man charged toward the officers with a knife and was shot several times.

Weiner witnesses told investigators they saw the suspect rush at the officers and a knife was recovered from the scene.

The man, whose name was not released by police, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident will be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team, the Firearms/Police-Involved Death Review Board and the police chain of command, Weiner said.
