Ohio AG joins call for Netflix to drop controviersial film

COLUMBUS – Ohio’s attorney general has joined the chorus of criticism of the French independent film Mignonnes, or Cuties, became available on Netflix last week.

Dave Yost, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Monday called on Netflix to remove the film due to the provocative depiction of its young female actors.

“In this era where we are fighting a seemingly never-ending battle against human trafficking, this film is counterproductive. it whets the appetites of those who wish to harm our children in the most unimaginable ways,” Yost said in a statement.

At the heart of the backlash is the idea that Cuties is dangerously and irresponsibly sexualizing pre-teen girls, which is what the movie itself is criticizing too. Netflix says in a statement that it is a, “social commentary against the sexualization of young children.”

The film has become the target of heightened politicized outrage from members of Congress, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and others online calling for subscribers to #CancelNetflix.
