Ohio remembers the “Savior of the Union”

COLUMBUS— The Ohio Statehouse is preparing to commemorate the repose of President Abraham Lincoln.

After he was shot and killed, Lincoln’s funeral train stopped in Columbus on its 13-day, 1,600-mile journey to his tomb in Springfield, Ill. An estimated 50,000 Ohioans viewed the assassinated Civil War president’s casket as it lay in the Statehouse Rotunda on April 29, 1865.

During the trip, one third of the population of the United States witnessed the train pass through their community.

The Batesville Casket Company created the 1865 casket for Lincoln and has provided the replica which will be on display in the Rotunda where the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A, a group of Civil War re-enactors, will provide an honor guard from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The Lincoln Funeral Train in Pictures and Photos

In conjunction with the repose of Lincoln, Battery A will also hold the 2017 Ohio Statehouse Civil War Encampment where visitors can learn about Civil War camp life by walking among soldiers’ tents, seeing how to fire cannon, helping the Ladies Aid Society deliver comfort to the troops while experiencing Civil War-era music, cooking and medical practices.
