Ohio Supreme Court hears arguments over local fees for streaming services

COLUMBUS (AP) — Are streaming services the same as cable operators?

The obvious answer might be no, but it’s becoming a big question for the Ohio Supreme Court.

It must decide if Netflix and Hulu must pay local governments the same fees cable operators do.

It’s an argument making its way to other states, as governments seek additional revenue.

Ohio’s Video Service Authorization law requires those who use cables and wires in public right-of-ways to pay fees.

Since most internet services use cables and wires, cities feel streamers should pay.

But in four states, Netflix and Hulu won arguments last year that they can’t be forced to pay the fees.
