COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio plans to apply for federal funds to explore expanding Amtrak service.
The Ohio Rail Development Commission said Wednesday that those dollars would go toward studying the possibility of two potential new rail corridors.
One corridor would be through Cleveland, Toledo and Detroit; the other would connect Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati.
Cleveland and Cincinnati already have Amtrak service to other states.
Republican Gov. Mike DeWine says getting the funds is the “first step of many.”
He says questions still need to be answered about the expansion’s impact on Ohio.
If its application succeeds, the Federal Railroad Administration would provide $500,000 each to study the new corridors.
