Ohioan’s body recovered from damaged Navy ship

SINGAPORE (AP) — The U.S. Navy says divers have recovered the remains of all 10 sailors who went missing after the USS John S. McCain and an oil tanker collided near Singapore last week.

That includes the body of Petty Officer Jacob Drake of Champaign County in west-central Ohio.

“Petty Officer Drake’s passing is heartbreaking news for Ohio and for our nation. Connie and I join the Champaign County community in prayers of peace and comfort for Jacob’s friends and family, as we commit to honor his memory and the ultimate sacrifice he made for our country.” –U.S. Sen Sherrod Brown (D-OH)

“My heart aches for the family of Jacob Drake, who died from the collision involving the USS John S. McCain. Jacob was a young man of great promise who dedicated his life to the service of our country. Jane and I are praying for Jacob’s family and his fiancé he leaves behind. Those who knew him personally will remember him for the man he was, but we will all remember him for his patriotism and service that is emblematic of the best of Ohio.” –U.S. Sen Rob Portman (R-OH)

The Japan-based 7th Fleet said Monday that Navy and Marine Corps divers had found the remains.

They had been searching in flooded compartments of the destroyer after the damaged ship docked in Singapore.

The cause of the Aug. 21 collision is under investigation.
