Ohio’s COVID-19 surge continues

COLUMBUS – Ohio, the United States and the world all passed grim milestones Sunday in the battle against the coronavirus.

The state reported 854 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19, continuing a surge in new daily cases that began last week and pushing the total number of cases to over 50,000 with 2,807 deaths.

The U.S. has confirmed more than 40,000 a day for three straight days. The daily number reflects tests done within the past 36 hours but could include people with symptoms dating back several days.

Spikes in some parts of the state, especially southwestern Ohio, have Gov. Mike DeWine thinking about reinstating restrictions in those places, though he said “we’re not there yet.”

“Where we’re seeing potential problem areas or problem areas, we’re going to consult with local officials and consult with them about what needs to be done,” he said during his Thursday briefing at the Statehouse.

Local and state officials have voiced concern over the growing number of cases of COVID-19 affecting younger people.

Columbus Public Health Director Dr. Mysheika Roberts says 46% of recent cases are among people ages 20 to 39 and the average age of the total number of cases statewide is 42.

The world has surpassed two sobering coronavirus milestones — 500,000 confirmed deaths, 10 million confirmed cases.

Ohio reported 51,046 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 on Monday, 737 more than Sunday with 2,818 deaths.
