Ohio’s role in hurricane prep

COLUMBUS – The unexpected roar of military jets could be heard in the skies of central Ohio Monday as the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard moved some planes from Hurricane Florence’s path on Virginia’s coast to Ohio.

Florence is headed for a region with some of the most well-known military bases in the country, including Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island in South Carolina.

Officials from Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton said the base’s F-22 Raptors and T-38 Talon training jets began flying out Tuesday for Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in southeastern Franklin County

About 100 personnel were to travel to Ohio to support the jets.

Forecasters said Florence was expected to blow ashore late Thursday or early Friday and hurricane watches or warnings included an area populated by more than 5.4 million people on the East Coast.
