COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an incident at the state prison facility in Orient that left an inmate dead and sent two corrections officers to the hospital with serious injuries, according to prison officials.

The female officers were attempting to remove Michael McDaniel from his cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient at approximately 3:00 p.m. Saturday when McDaniel became combative and an altercation followed, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said.
McDaniel, 55, declined a medical evaluation in the infirmary but collapsed shortly afterward and was pronounced dead late Saturday afternoon at Mount Carmel Hospital, Smith said.
One officer was treated and released and the other officer was in stable condition Saturday night, Smith said.
According to prison records, McDaniel was serving a six-month sentence for aggravated assault out of Franklin County.
