Oregon’s loss is Buckeyes’ gain: Now #3 in BCS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fears that Stanford might leapfrog the Buckeyes in the Bowl Championship Series standings after beating Oregon on Thursday were unrealized as Ohio State moved up one spot to No. 3 in the latest rankings.

The Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0) were idle and return to action this Saturday at Illinois (Noon/ESPN).

Florida State took firm hold of second place in the BCS standings behind top-ranked Alabama and grabbed the inside track to the national championship game.

The Seminoles were in second last week, but seemed likely to get passed by Oregon if the Ducks had remained unbeaten. Stanford, however, handed Oregon its first loss of the season on Thursday and Florida State benefited.

The Seminoles (.9619) are a solid second in the USA Today coaches’ poll and Harris poll, and second in the computer rankings that make up the final third of a BCS average.

Ohio State (.8926) is third in the “USA Today” and Harris Interactive polls but fourth in the computers, closer to fourth-place Stanford (.8689) than Florida State.

Unbeaten Baylor (.8618) is fifth, not far behind the Cardinal.
