OSU football player, 5-year-old girl among weekend shooting victims in Columbus

COLUMBUS – Police say Ohio State defensive tackle Haskell Garrett was in stable condition after being wounded in a shooting east of the campus area early Sunday, one of five people shot in Columbus over the weekend, including a 5-year-old girl and a woman who has become the city’s latest homicide victim.

Officers responding to a report of a shooting in the 400 block of Chittenden Avenue just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday found blood in the street and one shell casing nearby, said Det. Rob Stubblefield of the Felony Assault Unit.

The officers followed a trail of blood to an apartment on the 11th Avenue where the 22-year-old Garrett, a senior from Las Vegas, was found with a “through-and-through” gunshot wound to the cheeks.

He was taken to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and was expected to be released MOnday, according to a statement from OSU head football coach Ryan Day.

No arrests were immediately announced.

The 5-year-old girl was lying in bed in a home on S. 5th Street shortly after 4:00 a.m. Saturday was struck in the back and critically wounded when someone fired multiple rounds into the residence.

The girl was struck once in the back and was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in critical condition but was upgraded to stable condition and is expected recover from her injuries.

A round also struck a neighbor’s house across the street. No witnesses were reported.

A 20-year-old man is in jail, charged with murder in the shooting death of a woman on the South Side early Saturday, police said.

Terry Davis was arrested in the death of Norma Rae Monroe, who was found lying in front of Davis’s home in the 500 block of Lock Avenue just before 1:30 a.m., Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.

Monroe, 43, was the 94th homicide victim of 2020 in Columbus.

A 42-year-old woman was listed in stable condition after being shot in the back and shoulder on the West Side Friday afternoon.

Aracely Izaguirre told police she was standing in an alley in the 2500 block of Sullivant Avenue just before 1:15 p.m. she heard multiple gunshots and realized she had been hit, Det. Adam Federer of the Felony Assault Unit said.

At 9:50 p.ml. Friday, Officers responded to a reported robbery at the Story Lounge, 1420 E. 5th Avenue, where they learned that a victim had been shot and transported to an area hospital where they were listed in stable condition.

Meanwhile, police announced the arrest of a man being sought in the shooting death of a teenager earlier this month.

Police arrested Kaishawn Watts, 22, who has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Perniel Hook on Aug. 7, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

Hook was a passenger in a car when Watts began following the vehicle on the East Side. Police said the driver tried to flee but Watts started shooting, critically wounding Hook, who died the following night at Grant Medical Center.

A murder charge was filed against Watts on Aug. 12, Marable said.

A listed telephone number for Watts couldn’t be found Sunday and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
