COLUMBUS – Saturday’s game between No. 3 Ohio State and Maryland has been cancelled due to a number of coronavirus cases within the Maryland program and will not be rescheduled, the two schools announced Wednesday.

Maryland has halted team-related activities after eight players tested positive for COVID-19 over the last seven days.

“We wish Maryland, their student-athletes and programs well as they battle through this issue,” Buckeye head coach Ryan Day said.

According to a release from Maryland, “the joint decision to pause football activities and cancel Saturday’s game was made by Director of Athletics Damon Evans and University of Maryland President Darryll Pines, following a recommendation from University health officials, and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference.”

Ohio State is unbeaten after three games and Maryland has won two straight following a season-opening loss at Northwestern.

This was the third game involving a Top 5 team to be cancelled this week due to the virus.

Top-ranked Alabama’s game at LSU and No. 5 Texas A&M’s at Tennessee won’t be played Saturday because of COVID-19 issues. The Aggies and Volunteers will be rescheduled for Dec. 12, but the Crimson Tide’s game against the defending national champion Tigers is in danger of not being played at all.
