OSU’s Russell named Big 10’s top rookie

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye D’Angelo Russell has been named first team All-Big Ten and the league’s 2015 Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced Monday.

The Buckeyes are in action Thursday at the Big Ten Tournament.

The leading freshman scorer in the country and second-leading scorer in the Big Ten Russell averaged 19.2 points per game during the regular season, led the Buckeyes with 5.6 rebounds per game and sits second on the team with 5.2 assists per game.

Russell is the fourth league rookie of the year winner under Thad Matta in the last 11 years. Greg Oden (2007), William Buford (2009) and Jared Sullinger (2011) also claimed the honor.

Russell was joined on the Big Ten All-Freshman team by Ohio State’s Jae’Sean Tate while Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson were named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media.

Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors from the conference’s coaches and a media panel.

Kaminsky and Russell were joined on the first team for both the coaches and media by Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell and Iowa’s Aaron White. The coaches voted Maryland’s Dez Wells a first-team selection, while teammate Melo Trimble was selected as a first-team honoree by the media.

Terps head coach Mark Turgeon claimed Coach of the Year laurels from the media, while Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan got the nod from his peers.
