Perfect no more

COLUMBUS – Gregg Nigl is no longer perfect, but he held his unique standing among NCAA tournament pool players by maintaining his undefeated bracket through 50 games.

It was the overtime in Game No. 50 that got him.

Purdue advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2000, needing overtime to beat Tennessee 99-94 after blowing an 18-point lead in the South Regional semifinal, handing the 40-year-old neuropsychologist from Columbus, who had changed his Twitter name to Gregg “Perfect Bracket” Nigl, his first defeat.

The Boilermakers’ win not only ended Nigl’s perfect run but also dropped his bracket to sixth place in the NCAA’s bracket challenge.

Nigl was not in Louisville to see the game first-hand. Buick, an NCAA Tournament sponsor, had flown him and his nine-year-old son from Vermont, where they were on vacation, to Anaheim, Calif., where they watched third-seeded Tech’s 63-44 takedown of their beloved Michigan Wolverines in the West Region.
