COLUMBUS, Ohio – Officials in Worthington are warning folks there about a phone scam involving a man pretending to be a police officer.
Between Monday and Wednesday of this week, the man called two businesses, identified himself as a Worthington police officer and asked for credit card information. Both businesses got wise to the scheme and alerted police, spokesman Lt. Jerry Strait said.
Strait says the Worthington police will never ask for financial information over the phone. He recommends, if someone identifies themselves as a police officer or detective, get a call-back phone number and call the main Worthington Division of Police number at 614-885-4463 to verify the caller’s identity.
If the call is legitimate, Strait says you will be connected to an officer or detective.
