Plain clothes Columbus police officer nabs robber

COLUMBUS – A would-be bank robber picked the wrong time and the wrong bank.

Columbus police say Robert Chitwood walked into the Huntington Bank at 4466 N. High Street just after 1:00 p.m. Monday, implied he had a weapon, and demanded money from a teller, according to a Division of Police social media post.

Unbeknownst to Chitwood, 29, a plain clothes Columbus police lieutenant was in the bank and witnessed the attempted holdup.

The lieutenant arrested Chitwood in the bank without injury to anyone at the scene, police said.

Police said Chitwood was driving a stolen vehicle from Cincinnati, which was also recovered, and was in possession of a stolen check that he forged to himself, which belonged to the owner of the stolen vehicle.
