COLUMBUS – A placard being distributed to hearing-impaired drivers around central Ohio is meant to improve communication with police and vice versa.

The two-sided placard was developed as a joint effort between the Columbus Division of Police and the group Deaf World Against Violence Everywhere and can be used by a deaf or hard of hearing motorist to indicate their communication preference and to ask for help if they need it, Ofc. Missy Pagnanelli of the Columbus police Advance Training Unit said.
The flip side is for police to indicate the reason for the traffic stop and to request identification and additional documents, she said.
The placard has been approved by the Franklin County Chiefs’ Association.
