Police shoot, injure man with knife

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Columbus police say officers confronted by a man who threatened them with a knife and a pipe shot the man in the arm inside a West Side apartment early Friday morning.

This story has been updated to include the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

Abdiwahab was in stable condition at Mount Carmel West Hospital and facing charges of felonious assault and criminal damaging, police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

Hassan, 39, confronted officers who came to the door of his Briggs Road apartment, slamming doors in their faces while holding first a knife, then a pipe, and resisting attempts to subdue him, even standing up three shots from a Taser, Weiner said.

The incident stemmed from a neighbor’s complaint that Hassan had threatened her with a broomstick at her apartment at 3680 Briggs Road, Weiner said. Officers responding at approximately 3:50 a.m. were told there was an outstanding warrant for Hassan on a criminal criminal damaging charge from a previous dispute.

When they went to Hassan’s apartment and told him he was being arrested on the warrant, Weiner says he backed into the apartment and tried to close the door as officers struggled to take him into custody.

Hassan broke away and ran to the kitchen where he grabbed a knife using it to hold the officers at bay, Weiner said.

One officer deployed his Taser at Hassan, with no effect, and Hassan backed down a hallway to a rear bedroom where Weiner says he slammed the door. Officers opened the bedroom door and saw a woman and child inside just before the door was slammed shut for a second time.

The officers told Hassan repeatedly to drop the knife and surrender, but he replied that he didn’t have the knife, said Weiner. When the officers opened the door they were met by Hassan holding what appeared to be a metal pipe.

The officers deployed the Taser two additional times, again to no effect, at which point Hassan raised the pipe and advanced towards the officers.

Weiner says Ofc. Nicholas Talone fired his weapon, hitting Hassan in the arm, thought Hassan did not drop until the officers ordered him to several more times.

He was taken into custody and Weiner said no other injuries were reported.

The knife and pipe were recovered at the scene.

Weiner says Talone is a 10-year veteran of the force and is assigned to the Patrol Bureau.

The incident will be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team, made up of investigators from the Homicide Unit and a final investigative package will be forwarded to the Division of Police Firearms/Police-Involved Death Review Board, said Weiner.
