Police: Suspect fires at officers, killed by return fire

COLUMBUS – Columbus police say two plainclothes officers shot and killed a man who opened fire on them in South Linden Monday.

UPDATE: This article has been updated to include the names of the officers involved.

Officer Jason Bare, a nine-year veteran, and Ofc. Zachary Rosen, a five-year veteran, spotted two men standing near the intersection of Ontario Street and Duxberry Avenue at 6:10 p.m. and one of them had a gun, division spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.

A witness told police that the officers got out of their unmarked car with their badges displayed and ordered the man to drop his gun but he opened fire, Weiner said.

The officers returned fire and the man was hit several times. He died later at Grant Medical Center.

Weiner says the second man at the scene was detained and questioned but no charges have been filed.

No other injuries were reported.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, Weiner said.

The suspect’s name is not being released at this time pending positive identification, he said.
