Poll: Penn St. advances ahead of tilt with Buckeyes

COLUMBUS – The Buckeyes remained No. 2 in both major college football polls after romping over Iowa while their next opponent moved up three spots.

Penn State advanced from 16th to 13th in the AP Top 25 and in the coaches’ poll after a dominating victory over Minnesota Saturday.

Sean Clifford threw four touchdown passes, Penn State’s defense forced seven punts and the Nittany Lions beat the Golden Gophers 45-17.

Saturday’s game in State College will be the sixth straight meeting between the two teams with both ranked. The Buckeyes have won the previous five.

The first six teams in the AP Top 25 held their spots after either winning or not playing this past weekend.

Georgia is No. 1 for the third straight week, with Ohio State second.

No. 3 Tennessee, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Alabama also held their spots.

Splitting the uprights

Ohio State kicker Noah Ruggles is this week’s Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Ruggles was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals and made all six of his extra points Saturday.

The field goals, which all came in the first half, included a season-long 46-yarder.
