Preparing in light of Buckeye Lake dam report

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — State and local officials plan to talk about emergency preparedness in central Ohio in the aftermath of a federal report identifying problems with the Buckeye Lake Dam.

A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report released last week said the 180-year-old dam at Buckeye Lake should be replaced immediately. The agency recommended the lake be drained until repairs can be made.

National Flood Safety Awareness Week is March 15-21

State officials have said they will study the report and will seek public input. The lake will be kept at lower winter levels until a decision is made.

Leaders of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, the state Department of Natural Resources, and the Licking County Emergency Management Agency plan a Monday briefing at the EMA’s headquarters on emergency planning and risk-reduction strategies.
