PUCO approves additional area code for 614 region

COLUMBUS – Get ready to start dialing more numbers to make a call. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has approved the new 380 area code for those living in the 614 area, which includes Columbus, Franklin County and most of the city’s suburbs.

Beginning Jan. 30, customers in the 614 area code region getting new service, an additional line or, in some cases, moving their telephone service may be assigned a number in the new area code, according to a release from the PUCO Friday.

No matter what area code they live in, customers in the 614 area code will have to begin dialing 10 or 11 numbers, even to make a local call. Depending on whom they are calling, they may have to dial the area code plus the seven-digit telephone number or 1+area code+telephone number.

The telephone numbers of existing customers will not change, but PUCO officials say equipment and services – from voicemail to life safety systems and alarm systems – should be updates to recognize the new 380 area code as a valid area code.

The commission says special services that use three-digit numbers, such as 911, 411, and 311, remain unchanged.

Local calling areas and rates will not be affected.

Callers can dial using seven, 10 or 11 digits beginning Aug. 1 but will have no choice starting Jan. 30.
