Pump prices below $2/gallon

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gas prices in Columbus are still in free-fall, dropping to $1.95 a gallon Monday morning, the fourth straight week-to-week decline.

The average price was17 cents less than a week ago and 77 cents cheaper than it was on Dec. 1, according to a daily survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc. The statewide average price of $2.03 was 16 cents less than last week and $1.38 per gallon cheaper than a year ago.

The national average Monday was about $2.29 per gallon. That’s 10 cents cheaper than a week ago and about a dollar less than the average cost at this time last year.

As of last Tuesday, the national average price of gas had declined for 88 days in a row, the longest consecutive streak on record. Prices have fallen every day since Sept. 25, AAA public relations manager Michael Green said.

The low prices are saving consumers more than $450 million a day, Green says.

A combination of a healthy worldwide supply of crude oil and sluggish demand have helped drive the price of oil down by more than $50 per barrel since June, Green said.
