Puppies apparent source of human infection

COLUMBUS – Puppies sold at Petland have reportedly been linked to an infectious outbreak in Ohio and six other states.

The outbreak of the Campylobacter infection, which can spread from dogs to people, has been connected to 39 illnesses, including nine hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported by the Ohio Department of Health or the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a report in the Dayton Daily News.

Petland said in a statement that “The CDC has not identified any failures of Petland’s operating system that would lead to any campylobacter infection” and the company stood by its commitment to quality controls.

The agencies said that evidence links puppies sold at Petland as the likely source of the outbreak and Petland is “cooperating with public health and animal health officials to address this outbreak.”
