Race for the Cure expands to Athens

COLUMBUS – One-third of the women who are diagnosed with, and die from, breast cancer in the 30 counties around Columbus live in southeastern Ohio. Now, they are getting a Race for the Cure just for them.

Susan G. Komen Columbus, with help from the Ohio University School of Nursing, will expand the race to the brick streets of Ohio University on Oct. 25 for the Komen Athens Race for the Cure, Komen Columbus executive director Katie Carter said.

The Athens Race for the Cure will support programs in 18 counties in the southeastern section of the Komen Columbus service area: Athens, Vinton, Washington, Jackson, Morgan, Perry, Meigs, Gallia, Noble, Hocking, Scioto, Pike, Ross, Fairfield, Muskingum, Guernsey, Monroe and Lawrence.

“Southeastern Ohio residents face numerous barriers to breast cancer prevention, detection and treatment…The Komen Athens Race for the Cure will raise awareness and funds to make breast cancer detection and care more accessible to women who live in these counties,” Carter said.

Since 2000, Komen Columbus has provided almost $4,600 to support 217,571 services resulting in 119 diagnoses, according to Carter.
