COLUMBUS – As Ohioans try to dry out and recover from a rainy week that brought lots of flooding, warnings remained in effect Monday.
A flood warning continued for the Big Darby Creek at Darbyville until late Monday. At 1:00 a.m. Monday, the stage was 11.5 feet, 1-1/2 feet above flood stage.
Minor flooding is occurring and more is forecast and the National Weather Service predicted the creek would continue to fall below flood stage by Monday evening.
State Route 762 was closed in both directions between U.S. Route 23 and SR 104 Monday morning and Canal Road was closed south of Melvin Stone due to high water, according to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office. State Route 257 was closed between Hoskins and Radnor Roads in Delaware County, according tot the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Parts of central and western Ohio saw several inches of rain over the weekend as the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill moved across the state. A section of I-71 near Grove City was restricted due to high water after the area received 3 inches of rain in a few hours.
The wet weather on Saturday forced an early end to the gay pride festival in the Short North and put some of the aerial shows on hold at the Dayton Air Show.
High water that flooded a road leading to the Franklin County jail in Columbus on Saturday forced a few employees to get to work by boat.
Damage assessment teams spent the weekend surveying flooded areas in Logan County where the water began receding on Saturday. County leaders there declared a state of emergency on Friday.
Authorities in northern Ohio say the body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered from a spillway near Pleasant Hill Lake in Perrysville on Sunday.
Crews had been searching since Friday evening when one teen was rescued and another drowned in the waters near the dam.
The two teens were trying to help in a rescue Friday when a group had been swimming near the dam.
The sheriff’s office says the body of the 16-year-old girl was found about a mile away from the area.
A ranger with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources was able to rescue the 14-year-old girl who the older girl tried to save.
Police say a boy and his father have died and a teen has been hospitalized after the three got caught in a current following a kayaking outing in northeast Ohio.
Lisbon Police Chief Michael Abraham says the two boys had been rinsing mud off their shoes around 6 p.m. Sunday after kayaking with the 44-year-old man in Lisbon’s Little Beaver Creek when the man’s 10-year-old son got caught in the current. The 14-year-old tried to help the 10-year-old, but got caught himself.
Abraham says the 44-year-old man jumped in to save both, but drowned in his attempt. The 10-year-old’s body was discovered around 2:40 Monday morning.
Police say the 14-year-old was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital Sunday. His condition wasn’t known Monday.
