Record 174 homicides in 2020

COLUMBUS – The deadliest year in Columbus history ended with 174 homicides, 31 more than the previous record number.

There were 143 homicides in 2017.

The death of a 33-year-old man found in a parked pickup truck on a South Side street Wednesday night was the final reported murder of 2020.

Officers located Christopher Haycook sitting in the truck suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound at the intersection of Gilbert Avenue and Hanford Street at 8:55 p.m. while investigating a report that a man had been shot, Homicide Unit detectives said.

He died at a hospital at 12:26 a.m. Thursday.

A 48-year-old man believed to be the shooter remained at the scene and waited for police, investigators said. The incident remains under investigation and will be turned over to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office.
