COLUMBUS – The record number of homicides recorded in Columbus this year stands at 179 with a month left on the calendar.
The fatal shooting of a man on Friday afternoon in a neighborhood on the South Side marked the most recent homicide.
Christopher Miller was in a parked vehicle in the 700 block of Reinhard Avenue when he became involved in a confrontation with another man, who produced a handgun and shot the 39-year-old Miller before fleeing the scene, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.
Miller, 39, died later at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.
It is unknown what prompted the altercation, Marable said.

A drive-by shooting in a Blacklick subdivision had killed a teenager two days earlier, surpassing the adjusted tally of 177 homicides recorded in 2020.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS (8477).
Suspect in fatal shooting surrenders
Police say an Akron woman who was a suspect in the deadly shooting of a 28-year-old man on the Hilltop on Nov. 22 turned herself in two days later.
Samantha Stevens, 21, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Eric Washington Jr. during an argument in the 3500 block of Fremont Street, Marable said.
