COLUMBUS – Authorities in Pike County are awaiting the results of an autopsy before they will know the identity, or even the gender, of the person whose badly decomposed remains were found in a bag in a rural area west of the of the southern Ohio town of Waverly Monday afternoon.
Three mushroom hunters called the Pike County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center shortly before 3:00 p.m. to report that they found the remains just a few yards off the roadway near the intersection of Buchanan Road and Trego Road west of Waverly, Sheriff Charles Reader said.
Reader, deputies and detectives responded to the scene and found a large bag containing decomposed remains, which were confirmed to be human by the county coroner, Read said.
Investigators with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation collected evidence from the scene and Reader says the body would be transported to Montgomery County for an autopsy this week.
The victim’s gender and identification of the deceased should be confirmed through the autopsy, Reader said.
His office is treating the case as a homicide.
