COLUMBUS – A brother and sister who grew up in Reynoldsburg and were honor-roll students at their school they attended in Columbus left the U.S. in 2014 and joined the Islamic State group, where the brother was reportedly killed, according to media reports.
According to reports on NBC News, 10TV and in The Columbus Dispatch, Rasel Raihan and his sister Zakia Nasrin were among 15 Americans who traveled to the Middle East to be part of the extremist organization. Rasel was killed in 2014.
According to the report on “NBC Nightly News” on Sunday, Raihan, who would be 21, and his sister, who would be 24, lived in a Reynoldsburg home with their parents, who brought them to Ohio 16 years ago from Bangladesh.
The two attended Metro Early College High School where Nasrin was valedictorian in 2010, the newspaper reported.
Their parents declined to comment Monday.
