Reynoldsburg teachers strike in 7th day

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A strike by teachers in the Reynoldsburg City Schools entered its second full week Monday morning after a bargaining session between the district, the teachers’ union and a federal mediator produced no settlement.

About 360 Reynoldsburg Education Association members are striking in the district of about 7,000 students.

Representatives of the school board and union met at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service regional office in Columbus Sunday, according to district superintendent Tina Thomas-Manning, but the meeting failed to produce an agreement.

“After meeting for several hours, both the school board and the teachers union remained apart on numerous proposed contract points. The board continues to negotiate in good faith. We believe we have presented a contract proposal that is fair and reflects the economic realities of our school district,” Thomas-Manning said in a statement posted on the district’s website.

Thomas-Manning said the board’s most recent proposal remained unchanged from its previous stance:

The district will try to maintain a district-wide student-teacher ratio of 25-to-1.

More than 79 percent of the teachers will receive a guaranteed raise of 13 percent or more over three years, along with performance bonuses.

Teachers would pay 10 percent of the premiums for their health insurance.

The union planned a meeting Monday, according to ABC6/FOX28, but no further mediation sessions were scheduled.
