Rising murder rate

COLUMBUS – Five homicides reported in Columbus over the past three days have raised the total number of murders in the first nine months of 2020 to more than all of 2019.

The latest homicide victim was a 31-year-old man shot to death during an argument over a traffic accident on the Far North Side Thursday evening.

Prince Asare and Dennis Mensah were arguing about an accident that happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Harvester Lane just before 7:30 p.m. when police say Mensah, 31, pulled a handgun and shot Asare, who died later at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.

Marable says Mensah remained at scene after the shooting and surrendered to officers.

This was the 107th homicide in Columbus in 2020, compared with 105 homicides reported in the city in all of 2019.

Police say a suspect walked into a home on S. 18th Street in Olde Towne East just after 5:30 p.m. and shot a man there.

Wesley Fauver, 26, was reported in stable condition, Det. Robert Shepherd of the Felony Assault Unit said.

An 18-year-old man was expected to recover from an injury he suffered in a separate shooting incident later on Thursday.

Kenyl Rose-Patterson told investigators who interviewed him at Riverside Methodist Hospital late Thursday night that that he was walking back from the store in the area of E 5th Avenue and Cassady Avenue when he heard three gunshots and immediately dropped to the ground, where he realized he had been shot in the right buttock, Det. Bob McCotter of the Felony Assault Unit said.

Rose-Patterson told police he called a friend after being shot and had her take him to the hospital.

There was no scene or witnesses, McCotter said.
