COLUMBUS – Police say a robbery suspect died late Sunday night after a fight with several men who chased him after seeing him rob a woman at a Northeast Side gas station.
UPDATE 5/23/18 3:41 p.m.: The name of the robbery suspect was Kelvin West, 23.
Homicide Unit detectives determined that the man, whose identity had not been determined by police late Sunday apparently robbed a woman outside the Speedway Gas Station at 1442 N. Cassidy Avenue just before 10:00 p.m. and ran away, Sgt. Dave Sicilian said.
Several men, described as “good Samaritans,” who witnessed the robbery, chased the man to the Four Points Hotel, 3030 Plaza Properties Boulevard, where they tried to apprehend him and he resisted, resulting in a “physical altercation between the victim and these ‘good Samaritans,'” Sicilian said.
Officers responding to the report at approximately 9:53 p.m. found the man lying in the rear of the hotel. He was taken to OSU East Hospital by Columbus fire personnel in critical condition and he died of his injuries about an hour later, Sicilian said.
Police did not describe the specific nature of the victim’s injuries and Sicilian said they were withholding the identities of all involved parties until they could identify the victim, notify next of kin and to determine if criminal charges are appropriate.
The investigation continues, he said.
This is the 41st homicide of the year in Columbus.
