COLUMBUS – A convenience store clerk who shot a suspect dead during a robbery attempt on the Northeast Side early Friday was also injured, along with a customer.
Juanye Hawkins-Payne and Daythan Jones entered the Beechcroft Newstand, 1935 E. Dublin-Granville Road, at 1:09 a.m., armed and wearing masks, and demanded money, Sgt. Eric Piliya of the Homicide Unit said.
The two exchanged shots with the clerk and Hawkins-Payne, 19, was killed, Pilya said.
Jones fired at the clerk, Hamad Mobarak, and a customer, Victor Mendez, and fled.
Mobarak and Mendez, 29, were both transported to area hospitals and were treated and released, Pilya said.
Jones, 20, and 18-year-old Janiece Prowell-Bias were both charged with murder and the case was turned over to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, Piliya said.
This is the 124th homicide of the year in Columbus.
Meanwhile, police are treating the death of a woman whose body was found in an East Side alley early Thursday as suspicious.
Officers found the woman, whose name was being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next-of-kin, was found at 1:15 p.m. by patrol officers in an alley in the 400 block of Barnett Road, west of Plymouth Ave, Sgt. David Shimberg of the Homicide Unit said.
