Sheriff charged with stealing from drug drop boxes

FREMONT – A county sheriff in northern Ohio has been indicted on 43 counts, including 38 felonies, for allegedly stealing drugs from drop boxes.

The state attorney general’s office announced the grand jury indictments Tuesday night against Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been investigating Overmyer since September 2015 when local police chiefs expressed concerns about his behavior in prescription drug disposal drop box collections, according to the office of attorney general Mike DeWine.

Investigators say Overmeyer, 42, took medications from the drop boxes and deceived physicians and pharmacists in order to obtain prescription pain medication. The indictment also claims Overmyer misused his office’s Furtherance of Justice funds and tampered with records.

Overmyer is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.

It was not immediately known if he had an attorney who could comment on the charges:

12 counts of tampering with records, felonies of the third degree
12 counts of deception to obtain a dangerous drug, felonies of the fourth degree
Three counts of deception to obtain a dangerous drug, felonies of the fifth degree
Six counts of theft in office, felonies of the fourth degree
Four counts of theft, felonies of the fourth degree
One count of theft, a felony of the fifth degree
Five counts of filing false financial disclosure reports, misdemeanors of the first degree

DeWine’s office says BCI was asked to conduct an investigation by Sandusky County Prosecutor Thomas Stierwalt after local police chiefs expressed concerns regarding alleged unusual behavior by Overmyer in prescription drug disposal drop box collections.

The scope of the investigation quickly expanded.
