Kenneth Herring, 50, (right) was shot on the porch of a home in the 700 block of S. 17th Street a few hours after his girlfriend was shot on the South Side, police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said.
Officers were called to 1196 Lockbourne Road shortly after 9:00 p.m. on a report that a man shot his girlfriend. Richell Dixon, 44, was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition, Weiner said.
Just after midnight, Weiner said, plainclothes acting on a tip went to the S. 17th Street address looking for Herring and saw him standing on the porch of 719 S. 17th Street.
Weiner says uniformed and plainclothes officers were trying to take Herring into custody when five officers fired and hit him multiple times. Herring was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Weiner says a handgun was recovered from the scene and four people inside the home were interviewed and later released.
This was the seventh shooting incident this year involving Columbus police officers, Weiner said.
The incident will be investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team and the Firearms / Police-Involved Death Review Board., Weiner says
