COLUMBUS – An 8-year-old girl was taken to an area hospital in stable condition after being shot while sitting in a vehicle on a Northeast Side street Sunday, the latest in a string of shootings which claimed victims under 13 years of age over the past week.
Officers dispatched to the 800 block of E. Dublin-Granville Road at 4:32 p.m. on a report of a shooting found the child and several witnesses who told police that three unidentified men walking on the street produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at someone in a red hoodie, striking wo parked vehicles, according to Det. James Jude of the Felony Assault Unit.
The girl was in one of the vehicles and was hit in the back by one of the bullets.

A 12-year-old Reynoldsburg-area girl died Wednesday after being shot when a rifle accidentally went off while it was being handled by a neighbor in a nearby apartment, police said.
Investigators determined that Eric Carpenter was handling a rifle inside his apartment on Brooke Boulevard when the weapon discharged at 9:01 p.m. The round exited Carpenter’s apartment and struck the girl, who died at Mount Carmel East Hospital, Sgt. James Marable of the Homicide Unit said.
Carpenter, 42, was charged with reckless homicide, the 151st homicide of the year in Columbus, Marable said.
The 152 homicides in Columbus so far in 2020 is a new record.
Meanwhile, a 9-year-old boy was reportedly expected to survive after accidentally being shot in the head by his 14-year-old brother just after 10:00 a.m. Friday in the 300 block of Seemic Circle, near Mount Vernon Avenue, according to a report on WBNS 10-TV.
