Stand Down benefits homeless veterans

COLUMBUS – Homeless veterans are the guests of honor today at the Central Ohio Homeless Veterans Stand Down.

Central Ohio Homeless Veterans Stand Down: Greater Columbus Convention Center, Exhibit Hall E, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Homeless military veterans from all branches of the services can get a free lunch, haircut, medical screenings, counseling, clothing, grooming products, legal services, job search information and access to representatives from a variety of local social service agencies.

This year’s event includes the addition of 12 rental leasing agents and Habitat for Humanity as resources for the veterans.

Nelsonville-based Rocky Brands is giving $60,000 to provide 600 pairs of military-grade boots and supplying volunteers who will give personal sizing consultations.

About 150 volunteers and 70 social service providers assisted 528 veterans during the 2015 event.

A homeless veteran is identified as a veteran who does not own property, including those who rent, lease, reside with friends or family or live on the land.
