State Fair in the books

COLUMBUS – The 164th Ohio State Fair Sale concluded its 12-day run on Sunday with the annual Sale of Champions livestock auction.

On the sale bill were grand champion and reserve champion lambs, beef, chickens, turkeys and other livestock raised by Junior Fair exhibitors.

There was also a block of Swiss cheese, exhibited by Pearl Valley Cheese Co., represent the seven dairy champions.

The grand champion market beef, raised by Addison Jones, of Allen County, was sold for $50,000.

In full, the livestock was auctioned for a total of $284,000.

This year’s sale broke one record, for reserve grand champion market barrow, sold for $32,000.

Since 1995, the amount the exhibitors can earn from their exhibits’ sales has been capped at $20,000. Money earned beyond that is distributed to the Youth Reserve Program, which distributes funds for scholarships, Future Farmers of America, 4-H and a variety of other youth programs.

The Youth Reserve Program has awarded $3.2 million to approximately 33,600 youth exhibitors since its inception. This year’s auction raised $196,000 for the program.
