State tax panel clears Amazon proposal

COLUMBUS – A state panel has approved tax breaks for online retailer Amazon, which has promised to bring 2,000 jobs to central Ohio as part of a major expansion.

Amazon previously announced in May that it would be expanding in Ohio.

Gov. John Kasich’s office said Monday the Seattle-based company expects to create 2,000 full-time positions in Etna Township, in Licking County, and in the village of Obetz over several years, generating $60 million in annual payroll.

The state’s Tax Credit Authority approved a 75 percent, 15-year tax credit for the project.

The board reviewed tax credits for 14 economic development proposals brought by JobsOhio and its regional partners. The Kasich administration says the projects could create nearly 4,000 jobs and retain more than 900 statewide.

Barclays received approval for a project that could add 1,500 jobs in southwest Ohio. An exact location has yet to be determined.
